Plateau Region An area varying from semi-desert to dense forests and snow-covered mountains, the Plateau supported widely scattered groups of foragers in prehistoric times. The Natives practiced democracy and peacefulness in their loosely organized villages, and lived in harmony with neighboring tribes. Intensely spiritual, Plateau people employed long periods of isolation, fasting, and meditation in their quests for supernatural visions. By the 18th century the Nez Perce - Pierced Nose - and others of the eastern Plateau had adopted the life-styles of neighboring tribes, becoming horsemen and buffalo hunters.
